FAQs About Water Features -- Page 4
Q: If I want fish, is there a limit to how many I can introduce to my pond?
There is an optimal balance that is dependent on the size and depth of your pond. Fish will become stressed if they are overstocked in a pond because of the increased levels of ammonia and nitrite they produce. We will help you determine the right amount of fish to introduce to your pond.
Q: If a client decides they want them, can you stock the fish?
Absolutely, we are a full service shop, and can provide all components for your pond or water feature including the fish and any level of maintenance you prefer.
Q: Can I mix different varieties of fish?
Koi and Goldfish are docile fish and will exist happily together in your pond. Native species of fish (such as Bass) are predators and will consume any other fish they can swallow. It's best not to mix the predators with the docile species, as eventually all of your Koi and Goldfish will disappear!
Goldfish are hardier, but if your pond environment is healthy, Koi do just fine here.
Q: Do I need to feed my Koi and Goldfish?
No, because they are natural bottom feeders and consume the algae in your pond. Feeding isn't necessary unless the pond is new, when no algae are present. Otherwise, feeding is simply something the pond owner does to enjoy their fish. Fish shouldn't be fed more than once per day, and they shouldn't be fed once the pond temperature has fallen below 56 degrees Fahrenheit.
As water temperature drops, the metabolism of your fish will naturally slow down and they will become less active. It's important not to feed your fish during the winter because their slower metabolism impedes their ability to digest the food you give them.
